Shame on the Uniform: TSR Jawan Accused of Killing His Baby Girl Over Gender

Date:

Agartala | August 9, 2025 — In a shocking and tragic incident, a jawan of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) has been accused of murdering his own infant daughter simply because she was a girl.

The accused, identified as Rathindra Debbarma of TSR’s 10th Battalion, was reportedly stationed at the ADC headquarters in Khumulwng. According to the child’s mother, her husband mixed poison into a cold drink and fed it to their daughter on the night of August 8, leading to the baby’s death. The child’s body has been kept in the morgue of GB Hospital.

The grieving mother alleged that her husband frequently subjected her to severe physical and mental abuse for not giving birth to a son. Their residence is in the Behala Bari area. Upon receiving news of her daughter’s death, the devastated mother rushed to GB Hospital, where she learned little about who had brought the body or which doctor had examined it.

Local residents, upon learning of the incident, detained Rathindra Debbarma on the GB Hospital premises. Enraged by the alleged crime, an angry crowd confronted him, but police intervened, rescuing the accused from mob assault and taking him into custody under tight security.

The bereaved mother has demanded the death penalty for her husband. The case has sparked outrage across the state, with many questioning how a member of a disciplined force could commit such an act.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has championed the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) campaign nationwide — yet this incident raises disturbing questions about deep-rooted gender bias and violence against girls, even within law enforcement families.

Police investigations are underway.
