Khowai District Hospital added a new milestone to its history today by successfully conducting its first-ever hip replacement surgery. For the first time, an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital carried out the complex procedure on a patient.
The surgery, which lasted about an hour, was led by orthopedic specialist Dr. Amon Debbarma, along with anesthesiologist Dr. Biswajit Debbarma and a dedicated team of healthcare staff.
Speaking after the operation, Medical Superintendent Dr. Shorendu Riang said that although the hospital had orthopedic specialists earlier, complex surgeries could not be performed due to inadequate infrastructure. With the recent upgradation of facilities by the state health department, such procedures are now possible at Khowai.
The patient, identified as 65-year-old Kajal Debnath from Kalyanpur, underwent a hip replacement on the right leg. Until now, such advanced surgeries were usually carried out at Agartala’s GB Hospital or outside the state at a cost of around ₹2 lakh.
Dr. Amon Debbarma highlighted that the patient’s family did not have to bear any expenses for the operation, as the entire cost was covered under the Ayushman Bharat health scheme.
This successful surgery marks a significant step in strengthening healthcare services in Khowai district.
