Kanpur: In a shocking incident, a college student was severely injured after being attacked by stray dogs in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The victim, identified as Vaishnavi Sahu, a BBA student, was returning home from college on August 20 when a pack of dogs pounced on her.
Eyewitnesses said the dogs were chasing a group of monkeys when Vaishnavi suddenly came in their way. Three dogs attacked her at once, knocking her down on the road and biting her face and body. Local residents rushed to her rescue after hearing her screams and managed to drive the dogs away.
She was rushed to hospital where doctors found a deep wound on her right cheek, which required 17 stitches. Bite marks were also discovered on her nose and several other parts of her body.
Her uncle, Ashutosh, said, “The dogs mauled my niece on her way back from college. Her cheek was badly torn, and doctors had to put 17 stitches. She has injuries on other parts of her body too.”
The incident comes at a time when stray dog attacks and rabies-related concerns are under national spotlight. Recently, the Supreme Court expressed alarm over rising dog bite cases in Delhi, directing authorities to make residential areas free from stray dogs by moving them to shelters. The court also emphasized sterilization and vaccination drives, adding that aggressive or rabid dogs must remain in shelters and not be released back on the streets.
The attack on Vaishnavi has once again highlighted growing public safety concerns over the increasing number of stray dog attacks across the country.
