On 22 February 2026, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a protest march at Chakmaghat (Tripura) calling for the arrest of MLA Ranjit Debbarma, commonly referred to locally as Sharik MLA.
According to the report from Dainik Sambad, the rally began at the BJP Krishnapur Mandal office and proceeded through several streets, ending at Tui Madhu Bazaar. Demonstrators carried effigies of the MLA and demanded legal action against him.
Participants accused the MLA of disrupting a pre-planned BJP programme in the Ramchandraghata constituency and alleged that inappropriate remarks were made against senior BJP leaders, including the Tribal Welfare Department minister Vikash Debbarma and Prasenjit Debbarma.
Local BJP leaders, including Mandal president Dhananjay Das and MDC Vidyut Debbarma, also spoke at the event, emphasising each party’s right to hold democratic programmes while criticising the alleged interference by the MLA. The protest added to political tensions in the area and raised questions about future alliances in regional politics.
