A rare species of primate, the hoolock gibbon, was spotted in a residential area of Kalyanpur on Monday morning, drawing the attention of local residents and wildlife officials.
The animal was seen taking shelter in a bamboo grove near Netaji Club, located adjacent to the residence of the late Jogesh Bhattacharjee. The unexpected appearance of the gibbon in a human settlement led to a large gathering of curious onlookers hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare creature.
According to the local Forest Range Officer, the hoolock gibbon is not a carnivorous animal and is generally harmless in nature. Increased human encroachment and the gradual loss of forest habitats are believed to be the primary reasons behind such animals venturing into populated areas.
The hoolock gibbon, scientifically known as Hoolock gibbon, is known for its distinctive loud calls that resemble a “hoo” sound. Although it belongs to the primate family, officials clarified that it is not a monkey but an ape species, known for its gentle behavior.
The incident highlights the growing interaction between wildlife and human populations due to environmental changes and habitat loss.
