Though the rain has eased, the river remains swollen – 207 refugees in 4 camps!

Date:

Tripura, 31 may : In the past two days, continuous heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across various regions of Tripura, significantly disrupting daily life and causing extensive damage. According to reports received after dusk on Friday, several rivers—including the Manu, Khowai, Feni (in Sabroom), and the Haora in Agartala—are nearing or have reached dangerous water levels.

While rainfall eased slightly in Agartala after noon, heavy showers continued unabated in districts like Khowai, North Tripura, and Unakoti. Authorities have raised concerns that conditions could deteriorate overnight if rainfall intensifies. The Meteorological Department had earlier issued warnings regarding the same.

In Agartala, poor drainage systems once again failed to handle the monsoon deluge, resulting in waterlogging in several neighborhoods. Residents of low-lying areas reported rainwater entering homes, forcing many to evacuate to nearby safer zones. District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar visited affected areas including Sri Lanka Basti, Baldakhal, and parts of Pratapgarh to assess the damage. He warned that river levels may rise further and advised vulnerable residents to shift to safety preemptively.

Emergency shelters have been set up by the administration. One such camp at Swami Dayalananda School has already accommodated displaced families. By evening, four relief shelters were operational, providing refuge to 207 individuals from 57 families.

Official reports confirm that 106 residential houses have been damaged—33 of them completely destroyed, and 73 partially damaged. The Revenue Department stated that national highways connecting Panisagar, Longtharai Valley, Jirania, Karbook, Sabroom, and other regions have also been severely affected by flooding.

In response, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha spoke with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, requesting urgent assistance for repair and reconstruction of damaged highways. Gadkari reportedly assured swift action.

The Haora River’s level was recorded at 10.01 meters in the evening—slightly above normal—posing a major threat to adjacent areas like Chandrapur, Kashipur, and Chanpur. Rescue boats were deployed as the administration intensified relief and evacuation efforts.

Late Thursday night, strong winds and torrential rain caused a massive tree to fall across a road in Agartala’s Lakshminarayan Bari area, which was cleared by morning. In Ramharipara (Takarjala Golaghat area), a metal bridge was swept away by strong currents. Waterlogging also hit large parts of Bishalgarh, with Routhkhola among the worst affected.

In Udaipur, poor drainage flooded localities including Sonamura Chowmuhani, Rajarbagh, Khilpara, and Brahmabari. Power outages have also plagued areas like Melaghar and Kakraban in Sepahijala and parts of Gomati district.

Bisramganj in Sepahijala district received the highest rainfall at 21.1 cm, followed by Mohanbhog (20.5 cm), Amar Pur (20.2 cm), and New Bazar (13.8 cm). Other recorded rainfalls include:

Jirania: 15.9 cm Khowai & Teliamura: 11.2 cm Kakraban: 10.5 cm Belonia (South Tripura): 11.4 cm Sabroom: 10.9 cm Kailashahar (Unakoti): 8.5 cm Kamalpur (Dhalai): 7.1 cm

Friday’s maximum and minimum temperatures were 28.5°C and 25.8°C, respectively. The Met Department forecasts overcast skies and continued light to moderate rainfall across the state on Saturday. A red alert has been issued specifically for North Tripura and Unakoti districts.

Residents are urged to stay alert and follow all safety advisories issued by local authorities.
