Tragedy at RCB Victory Celebration: 11 Dead, 33 Injured — Kohli and RCB Respond After Six Hours

Date:

A joyous celebration turned into a nightmare on Wednesday as 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans lost their lives and 33 were injured in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The tragedy unfolded around 4:30 PM when an overwhelming crowd gathered to celebrate RCB’s maiden IPL title win.

Despite the heartbreaking incident outside, the celebrations inside the stadium reportedly continued as planned, prompting widespread outrage and questions across the nation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has distanced itself from the event, placing the responsibility squarely on the organisers — RCB and local authorities.

RCB issued an official statement approximately six hours after the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. Star player Virat Kohli, sharing the statement on social media, wrote: “At a loss for words. Absolutely heartbroken.”

RCB’s Official Statement

“There was an overwhelming turnout across Bengaluru to welcome the team back in the afternoon. We have come to know through media reports about the unfortunate incident that occurred during the celebrations. We are deeply saddened by this tragic event,” the RCB statement read.

“Ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB extends heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. Upon learning of the incident, we immediately altered the event schedule and took necessary steps in consultation with local authorities. We urge all our supporters to stay safe,” the statement concluded.

KSCA Announces Compensation

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has also announced compensation for the families of the deceased.

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a historic and joyous moment for RCB and its fans. Calls for accountability and better crowd management at such public events are growing louder.
