In a major development along the Indo-Bangladesh border, reports from border sources indicate that a fierce gun battle broke out between two rival groups — the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) — in the Baghaichhari area of Bangladesh’s Rangamati district.
The exchange of fire reportedly took place on Friday morning between 8 AM and 11 AM. During the armed confrontation, UPDF’s section commander Ripon Chakma is believed to have been killed.
Tensions have been running high in the region due to long-standing conflicts between the UPDF and PCJSS, both of which are active in the hill tracts of southeastern Bangladesh and have often clashed over territorial and political dominance.
Security forces in the region are said to be on high alert following the incident. Further details are awaited as the situation develops.
