Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday in the wake of the tragic Air India plane crash. Upon landing at the Ahmedabad airport, he immediately visited the crash site, where he spent nearly 20 minutes reviewing the scene of devastation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continues its operations at the site, searching for the missing, while forensic teams have begun collecting evidence.
PM Modi then visited the Command Hospital in Ahmedabad, where 25 injured individuals from the crash are receiving treatment. Among them is Vishwakumar Ramesh — the sole surviving passenger of the ill-fated London-bound Air India flight. He is currently being treated in the hospital’s Super Ward 7.
Taking to social media on Friday, the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow:
“We are all devastated by the Ahmedabad air crash. The sudden loss of so many lives is heartbreaking and beyond words,” he wrote.
Modi was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu during his visit to the hospital, where he met with injured survivors and inquired about their health.
Earlier in the morning, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister C.R. Paatil, and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi received the Prime Minister at the airport. Modi then proceeded to the crash site, where he was briefed about the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, the process of identifying the deceased passengers is underway through DNA testing. According to news agency ANI, samples from the deceased have been collected at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for identification purposes.
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson also visited the crash site on Friday to assess the situation firsthand.
