Bird Hit Disrupts Air India Flight from Delhi to Pune; Multiple Cancellations Cited Across Network

Date:

New Delhi/Pune, June 20: An Air India flight operating from Delhi to Pune was struck by a bird mid-air early Friday morning, leading to the cancellation of its return journey and raising broader concerns over operational disruptions faced by the airline across its domestic and international network.

Flight AI 2469, carrying over 100 passengers, departed Delhi at 5:31 AM and landed safely in Pune at 7:14 AM despite the bird strike incident. Air India officials confirmed that the aircraft suffered a bird hit during its approach to Pune Airport. While the pilot managed a safe landing, the airline opted to ground the aircraft for thorough inspection, leading to the cancellation of its scheduled return to Delhi.

Passengers were assured of alternative arrangements, and those who chose not to travel were offered full refunds. “Passenger safety is our top priority, and any technical anomaly—even minor—triggers strict protocol, including cancellation for preventive checks,” an Air India spokesperson said.

This incident comes on a day when Air India announced the cancellation of multiple other flights due to a combination of maintenance issues, adverse weather conditions, and temporary airspace closures. Flights affected include both domestic and international routes such as AI 906 (Dubai to Chennai), AI 308 (Delhi to Melbourne), AI 309 (Melbourne to Delhi), AI 2204 (Dubai to Hyderabad), AI 874 (Pune to Delhi), AI 456 (Ahmedabad to Delhi), AI 2872 (Hyderabad to Mumbai), and AI 571 (Chennai to Mumbai).

Aviation analysts say such cascading cancellations indicate mounting pressure on fleet maintenance and logistical coordination within Air India’s growing operations. “A bird strike may be a one-off, but when coupled with multiple systemic cancellations, it reflects strain in scheduling and backup readiness,” said an aviation expert.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident, and standard post-incident procedures are underway. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

Passengers are advised to check their flight status prior to traveling, as delays or further adjustments are possible in the coming days.
