A New Horizon in Digital Creativity: Content Creator Labs to Be Set Up in 15,000 Schools and 500 Colleges

Date:

If becoming a content creator is a dream, the Central government has made a major announcement to help turn that dream into reality. In the current Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that special Content Creator Labs will be established in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges across the country. The aim is to provide students, from a young age, with hands-on training in creative work within the digital ecosystem.

Following the COVID period, smartphones and tablets have become an integral part of student life alongside formal education. Building on this shift, the government seeks to give digital skills a more institutional and structured framework. However, it has made it clear that this initiative is not intended to create mainstream YouTubers or social media influencers, but rather to prepare future professional digital creators.

In her Budget speech, the Finance Minister highlighted that the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sector is expanding rapidly and holds immense potential for future employment. To tap into this opportunity, the labs will be set up under the initiative of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, with oversight from the Indian Institute of Creative Technology.

Through these Content Creator Labs, students will receive formal training in digital storytelling, game design, visual effects, and animation. The government believes this will not only enhance education but also create opportunities for employment and startups, while strengthening skills related to modern technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Nirmala Sitharaman further stated that by 2030, the AVGC sector will require nearly 200,000 skilled professionals. To strengthen this sector, the Budget has allocated ₹4,551.94 crore to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. A significant portion of this has been earmarked for public broadcasters, including Prasar Bharati. Additionally, ₹250 crore has been allocated specifically for talent development in the AVGC sector.

The announcement has been welcomed by the Game Developers’ Association of India (GDAI). According to board member Manish Agarwal, this decision will give fresh momentum to India’s gaming, AVGC, XR, and interactive media industries, while significantly expanding future career opportunities for young people.
