In a concerning development, West Tripura district has reported a sharp rise in crimes against women over the past one and a half months. The incidents include multiple cases of molestation, the sexual assault of minors, the brutal murder of a housewife, and the shocking killing of an elderly woman during a gold-snatching attempt. These consecutive crimes have triggered alarm and outrage among local residents and rights activists alike.

Responding to this grim situation, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has taken a firm stand by submitting a deputation to the police authorities, highlighting the failure of the administration and law enforcement agencies to provide adequate protection to women and prevent such atrocities.

According to AIDWA representatives, despite the frequency and severity of these crimes, police intervention and preventive measures have been insufficient. They pointed out lapses in timely investigations, lack of visible patrolling, and failure to instill a sense of safety in affected areas. The association strongly emphasized that such negligence only emboldens perpetrators and worsens the vulnerability of women, particularly in rural and suburban pockets.

The deputation, submitted by members of the South Nandanagar unit of AIDWA, called for immediate and concrete action, including:

  • Swift investigation and justice in all pending cases,
  • Increased patrolling in sensitive areas,
  • Deployment of women police personnel,
  • Setting up of women help desks in police stations, and
  • Organizing awareness campaigns to empower women and sensitize the public.

The members also demanded that accountability be fixed on the concerned police officials for their inaction or delay in handling these sensitive matters.

The AIDWA reiterated that unless urgent steps are taken, the safety and dignity of women in West Tripura will remain under threat. They warned that continued inaction would lead to larger statewide mobilizations demanding justice and reform in the policing system.

This deputation serves as a wake-up call for the administration, reminding them of their duty to ensure law, order, and justice for every citizen—especially women, who continue to face disproportionate threats to their safety and well-being.
