A major controversy has erupted in Tripura after a Facebook post by Tipra Motha leader David Murasing went viral on social media, drawing accusations of attempting to incite communal tension between the state’s Bengali and tribal communities.

In the post, Murasing alleged that Bengali men have been continuously involved in the rape and murder of tribal women, while claiming that tribal men have never targeted Bengali women. He further accused the Bengali community of consistently opposing tribal demands, committing violence against them, and exploiting tribal resources.

Murasing’s statements — written in Bengali — included multiple contentious claims, such as:

“Tiprasas never object to Bengali demands, but Bengalis regularly oppose Tiprasa demands and resort to violence… Bengalis forcibly collect Durga Puja donations from tribals and commit atrocities on them… ADC area contracts are monopolized by Bengalis… So, who is actually communal?”

The post has drawn widespread criticism online, with many calling it deeply inflammatory and factually unsubstantiated. Critics allege that the language used is intended to provoke hostility and division between communities that have a long history of coexistence in the state.

Despite the escalating backlash, Tipra Motha Supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma has so far issued no public response to Murasing’s remarks, sparking further debate about the party’s stance on the issue.

Social media users, activists, and political observers have warned that such rhetoric, if left unchecked, could worsen ethnic tensions in Tripura, which has a delicate history of inter-community relations.

Authorities are yet to announce any official investigation or legal action regarding the viral post.
