Flash Floods Wreak Havoc in Uttarakhand’s Dharali Village; Dozens Missing

Date:

A devastating cloudburst late Tuesday night brought flash floods and landslides to Dharali, a remote village in Uttarakhand’s upper Himalayan region. The force of the water swept away homes, roads, and lives, plunging the small community into chaos.

Rescue officials have confirmed at least four deaths so far, while nearly 100 people are still unaccounted for. Many families have been separated, and the search continues under difficult conditions. Despite ongoing rainfall and unstable terrain, emergency teams including the Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have rescued more than 60 people trapped under debris or stranded in isolated spots.

Survivors recall the horror of the night. The sound of crashing water and landslides woke residents just moments before water rushed into homes. Eyewitnesses described walls collapsing, livestock disappearing into the current, and people screaming for help as mud and stones swept through the village.

This tragedy has once again drawn attention to the fragile condition of the Himalayan environment. Experts point to ongoing deforestation, reckless slope-cutting for roads, and large-scale dumping of construction waste as major contributors to the increasing frequency of such disasters. The recent clearance for the felling of over 6,000 deodar trees in the Bhagirathi Eco-Sensitive Zone for road widening has only intensified the debate over unscientific development in the hills.

With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities are racing against time to reach remote locations and provide relief to displaced families. Temporary shelters are being set up, while helicopters have been deployed to airlift those still cut off.

As the waters slowly recede, what remains in Dharali is not just destruction—but a warning. The delicate balance of nature in the Himalayas is tipping, and unless urgent action is taken to protect the ecosystem, such tragedies may become heartbreakingly common.
