Agartala, May 30:
Tripura has been witnessing persistent heavy rainfall across several districts, causing disruption to daily life, waterlogging in many areas, and a steady rise in river levels. While the situation remains under control, concerns are mounting in low-lying areas.
Shops in local markets opened slowly as heavy showers continued throughout the day, forcing many vendors to wrap up early. School campuses, which are currently closed for summer vacation, appeared deserted as students remained indoors. Despite the rain, some were seen venturing out with umbrellas and raincoats.
In many areas, continuous rain has led to traffic slowdowns and general discomfort for pedestrians and commuters. The Howrah River in Agartala and other rivers across the state have started to swell gradually. However, the authorities have yet to issue any public warning or alert, as the situation has not reached any danger level.
Rainfall Measurements in Key Areas (in cm):
Agartala – 1.1 cm Bodhjungnagar – 1.8 cm Khowai – 1.2 cm Dhalai – 1.2 cm Unakoti – 1.1 cm
According to the Meteorological Department, the rainfall is expected to continue for the next few days. Light to moderate rain is predicted across various parts of the state through the weekend.
No Danger Alert Yet, But Authorities Stay Vigilant
While there’s been no indication of any emergency, public anxiety is rising as the water level in rivers and urban drains increases. Officials from the Disaster Management and Urban Development Departments are keeping an eye on vulnerable areas, especially those prone to flooding.
In case the rain intensifies, there are provisions for issuing a red alert in the most affected districts. So far, a red alert has been prepared as a precaution for parts of North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, and Khowai districts, where rainfall may exceed 40–50 mm (4–5 cm).
The Meteorological Department has warned of potential gusty southwesterly winds in certain areas. The administration has advised residents to remain alert, though no emergency measures have been activated yet.
Extended Forecast and Precautionary Measures
Rain is expected to continue until Sunday. Friday through Sunday may see 7 to 20 mm of rainfall in many areas. Authorities have recommended that residents in flood-prone zones remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel if rainfall intensifies.
Although no widespread danger exists at the moment, the situation is being closely monitored. Local administrations have been instructed to stay ready with response measures in case of sudden waterlogging or flash flooding.
