High Court Rejects MLA Ranjit’s Petition Against Media Outlet

Date:

The Tripura High Court has dismissed a writ petition filed by Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma against the electronic news outlet Headlines Tripura National. The petition, which was filed under Article 226 of the Indian Constitution, sought legal action against the news organisation for allegedly publishing a report that damaged the MLA’s political image by claiming issues with fake Bangladeshi voter IDs and forged birth certificates. However, the police declined to register an FIR, saying the complaint primarily involved defamation, which is not a cognizable offence requiring police action. The High Court, led by Justice T. Amarnath Gaur, agreed with the police decision and rejected Ranjit’s petition, emphasising that proper legal evidence is necessary in such cases and that media freedom must be respected.
