A tragic landslide struck the Kedarnath Yatra route on Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of two pilgrims and injuring three others. The incident occurred around 11:20 AM near Junglechatti in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. Massive boulders tumbled down the mountainside, hitting pilgrims trekking along the hilly path.
According to officials, the landslide occurred suddenly, leaving little time for people to react. Two individuals died on the spot, while three others — including a woman — sustained serious injuries. The injured have been admitted to a hospital near Gaurikund.
Rescue operations are currently underway. The District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) and local police, led by Rudraprayag SP Akshay Prahlad Konde, quickly reached the site and are assisting in evacuating other pilgrims from the area to safety.
Notably, this is the second such incident reported in recent days. A landslide also occurred last Sunday at the same Junglechatti stretch, resulting in the death of another pilgrim. Following that event, the route from Sonprayag to Kedarnath was temporarily shut down.
Adding to the series of tragic events, a helicopter crash was reported early Sunday morning while en route from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi. The chopper went down in a forested area near Gaurikund, killing all seven people on board — including a child.
Authorities are urging pilgrims to stay alert and follow safety advisories as weather conditions remain unstable in the region.
