New Delhi | August 8, 2025 — In a strong message of solidarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured India’s farmers that his government will stand by them through the latest trade turbulence caused by Washington’s decision to double tariffs on Indian exports to 50%.
Speaking at a public event, Modi stressed that agricultural producers would remain a top priority for his administration, even if it meant shouldering significant political or economic challenges. “Our farmers are the backbone of the nation. No matter the pressure, we will protect their interests,” he declared.
The US move has raised concerns among trade analysts about potential repercussions for sectors such as textiles, spices, and agro-based goods. However, government sources indicate that talks are underway to explore alternative export markets and strengthen domestic support measures.
Experts suggest the tariff hike could be part of a broader geopolitical realignment, but Modi’s statement appears aimed at reassuring rural communities ahead of key state elections later this year.
