During the budget session of the Tripura Assembly, the opposition strongly questioned the government over the weakening of the Indian rupee despite claims of steady GDP growth. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury raised concerns about the apparent mismatch between economic growth figures and currency performance, putting the ruling side under pressure.
He also sought clarity on how much financial authority state governments retain in taxation after the implementation of GST, a question that reportedly remained unanswered during the discussion.
In response, Chief Minister Manik Saha and Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy highlighted the broader national economic vision and reiterated that no additional tax burden had been imposed in the state budget. They emphasized ongoing development initiatives and India’s goal of becoming a top global economy.
However, the opposition expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out the lack of detailed responses on key issues. Questions were also raised about government claims regarding the creation of “Lakhpati Didis,” with demands for specific data that were not addressed during the session.
