New Delhi witnessed a disturbing incident involving a young woman from Sikkim who claims she was physically assaulted and sexually harassed during a birthday celebration. The woman, now back in her home state, has taken to social media demanding swift justice.
According to her statement, the incident occurred at a restaurant in the capital where she was allegedly slapped, punched, and inappropriately touched by a group of men. She filed a complaint at Safdarjung Police Station, accusing the assailants of both physical and sexual assault.
In a video message shared online, the victim expressed her anguish, saying, “I stood up against what was wrong. They beat me brutally, and one man touched my private parts. If justice is denied, I will set myself on fire in front of the restaurant.”
The case initially sparked outrage over claims of police inaction. Many netizens and activists alleged that the lack of urgency reflected discrimination against people from Northeast India. Darjeeling MP Raju Bista later stated that Delhi Police had arranged for her safe return and hinted at a possible settlement between the parties.
While political leaders have called for a fair probe, women’s rights groups have urged authorities to ensure the complaint is not brushed aside in the name of compromise.
The incident has reignited debates over safety, gender-based violence, and the treatment of people from the Northeast living in metropolitan cities.
