Agartala, June 6: On the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, tensions flared in parts of Agartala after several vehicles transporting cattle were intercepted and handed over to the police by members of a Hindu organization. The incident occurred on Friday under the jurisdiction of West Agartala Police Station.
According to sources, the cattle-laden vehicles were being transported for the purpose of Qurbani (ritual sacrifice), which is a religious practice observed by Muslims during Eid-ul-Adha. However, before they could reach their destinations, a group of youth affiliated with a Hindu outfit stopped the vehicles and alerted the police, who subsequently detained the vehicles and the cattle.
As of Friday evening, the vehicles had not been released, which sparked anger and concern among members of the Muslim community. In response, large groups began gathering and launched a protest demanding the immediate release of the vehicles and the cattle.
The situation quickly escalated, prompting the deployment of a large contingent of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.
