Sepahijala, Tripura – A spine-chilling case has emerged from Tripura’s Sepahijala district where a 28-year-old woman allegedly killed her own five-month-old daughter in order to run away with her lover.
Police identified the accused as Suchitra Debbarma, a resident of the district. Investigators said she had been in a relationship with another man for over a year. On Saturday night, when her husband, Amit Debbarma, was away working at a rubber plantation, Suchitra allegedly strangled the infant inside their home.
Neighbours grew suspicious after hearing distressing cries earlier in the night but later found the baby lying lifeless on the bed. The matter was immediately reported to the police, who rushed to the spot. The infant was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby health centre.
Police launched a search for Suchitra, who had reportedly fled after the incident. She was later arrested and booked for murder. “Preliminary investigation suggests the motive was to eliminate what she saw as an obstacle to eloping with her partner,” said a senior police official.
The gruesome act has sent shockwaves through the local community. Many residents gathered outside the police station demanding strict punishment. The child’s father, visibly devastated, is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
This incident comes just days after another harrowing case in Tripura, where a Tripura State Rifles jawan allegedly killed his one-year-old daughter, reportedly due to dissatisfaction over her gender. The back-to-back cases have sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger social awareness and legal action to protect children from domestic crimes.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and the accused will be produced before court soon.
