The ongoing controversy over Tipra Motha leader David Murasing’s communal remarks targeting the Bengali community has taken a new turn, after party supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma issued a public statement on social media.
Pradyot’s post, widely appreciated for its strong stance that rape and molestation have no religion, caste, or community, emphasised that sex offenders are criminals whose actions cannot be tied to any group.
He wrote:
“No matter what anyone says, a rapist or a molester does not have a religion, caste or community… A sex offender is a criminal and has no religion, community or caste.”
While many hailed this as a principled stand, his statement notably did not mention David Murasing’s inflammatory Facebook post, which has been accused of attempting to incite communal tensions.
David Murasing’s Viral Communal Post
In his earlier post, David Murasing alleged that Bengali men have repeatedly raped and murdered Tiprasa women, while accusing Bengalis of opposing tribal demands, monopolising economic opportunities, and forcibly collecting Durga Puja donations from tribals.

The post, written in Bengali, paints the Bengali community as a whole in an extremely negative light. Critics warn it could seriously damage the delicate relationship between tribal and non-tribal communities in Tripura.
The Unanswered Questions
While Pradyot’s stance on crime is clear and commendable, political observers are now asking:
If the party chief believes crime has no community, why is a senior party leader targeting Bengalis specifically? Why has there been no directive to remove the communal post from social media? Is Tipra Motha prepared to address rhetoric from within its own ranks that could spark unrest?
Public Concern Over Community Harmony
Tripura has a long history of ethnic sensitivity between Bengalis and tribals. Social activists fear that leaving Murasing’s post online without action could erode decades of brotherhood and mutual trust.
As of now, David Murasing’s post remains on Facebook, and no disciplinary measures have been announced by Tipra Motha leadership.
