In a shocking display of lawlessness that has thrown Tripura’s policing into question, a government Bolero vehicle belonging to Shiuli Das, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bishalgarh Women Police Station, was hijacked in broad daylight by a group of miscreants. The brazen crime took place yesterday afternoon at the busy Bishalgarh Hospital Chowmuhani, exposing a complete collapse of police control in the area.
The vehicle, driven by the official police driver, was intercepted by two youths who physically assaulted the driver and snatched the keys. Soon after, two more men arrived on a scooter, and the four made off with the police vehicle—without facing any resistance.
Despite the arrival of the Additional Superintendent of Police shortly after the incident, there has been no trace of the hijackers. The fact that criminals could seize a senior police officer’s vehicle in broad daylight has sparked fear and fury among residents.
Public anger is now boiling over, with citizens openly mocking the local police as ineffective and inactive. Many claim Bishalgarh has turned into a “safe zone for criminals” while the police have become mere “puppets in their hands.”
“Are the police in deep slumber with oil in their noses?” asked a furious resident. “Criminals are operating without fear. Who’s backing them? The police or the government?”
Critics say this hijacking is just one in a series of recent failures by the Bishalgarh police, turning the area into a crime hotspot. From daring robberies to custody escapes and now this hijacking, locals believe the situation is spiraling out of control.
Unless swift and serious reforms are introduced, people warn, Bishalgarh may soon become the symbol of total law enforcement collapse in Tripura.
